Julie Fugenschuh
Executive Director
At Project Iowa, Julie Fugenschuh isn’t just leading the organization—she’s shaping a movement. As Executive Director, Julie brings a deep passion for people, justice, and community-building to everything she does. With a background in social work, education, and psychology, she has dedicated her life to helping individuals discover their purpose and build stable, meaningful careers.
But if you ask Julie what defines her most, she won’t start with her impressive career—she’ll start with family. As the proud mother of seven and Mimi to thirteen (and counting!), she knows the value of connection, inclusion, and making space for everyone at the table. Whether at home or at work, Julie’s life is centered on relationships, and that’s exactly what makes her an incredible leader.

A Heart for Justice & Community
Julie is passionate about people and how they are treated. She sees herself as a justice warrior, believing that every individual deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to thrive. This core belief has shaped not just her career but her approach to leadership at Project Iowa, where she fosters a culture that is welcoming, innovative, and safe for everyone to grow.
Having been with Project Iowa since its inception, Julie has seen firsthand how lives are transformed through connection, self-confidence, and purpose. She takes immense pride in the fact that Project Iowa doesn’t just help people find jobs—it helps them find themselves and build a future they’re proud of.

Leading with Vision & Experience
Julie’s path to leadership has been nothing short of inspiring. A Des Moines native, she attended St. Mary’s in Winona, Minnesota, and the University of Iowa, where she studied special education, psychology, and social work. One of her proudest accomplishments? Earning her Master of Social Work alongside her oldest daughter—though she admits they might have been just a tiny bit competitive about their grades.
Julie’s expertise lies in relationships, connection-building, and creating inclusive spaces. She has a unique ability to make everyone feel valued, ensuring that Project IOWA remains a place where people don’t just come for career help—they come to belong.

Living the Mission
For Julie, leading Project IOWA isn’t just a job—it’s her calling. She firmly believes that everyone has purpose, and she’s dedicated to helping individuals uncover their strengths and step into careers that bring them fulfillment and stability. She describes the workplace culture as creative, innovative, and safe for growth, a reflection of the supportive environment she’s worked hard to cultivate.

Beyond the Office
Outside of work, Julie enjoys biking, reading, and, of course, spending time with her ever-growing family. She also keeps her door (and dinner table) open to friends, extended family, and anyone who might need a place to feel at home. You never quite know who might show up at a Fugenschuh family gathering, but one thing’s for sure—it will be filled with laughter, love, and great conversation.
Julie’s leadership, heart for justice, and unwavering commitment to lifting others up make her an invaluable part of Project Iowa. If you haven’t met her yet, just know this: she’s already cheering for you—and probably figuring out how to bring you into the family.
