YouthWorks is more than a program—it’s a launchpad for high school students ready to take on the real world.

As the only year-long high school internship program in Central Iowa, YouthWorks combines classroom learning, career training, and a paid internship into one transformative experience. Through hands-on work, mentorship, and real-world exposure, students gain the tools they need to succeed beyond graduation—whether they pursue college, enter the workforce, launch a business, or take time to explore what’s next.

Local businesses play a key role, offering meaningful opportunities that go far beyond a typical part-time job. Each student is matched with a mentor who provides guidance, encouragement, and insights into the professional world.

YouthWorks doesn’t just prepare students—it strengthens our community. Employers help shape the workforce of tomorrow, while students gain purpose, confidence, and a clear path forward.

How YouthWorks Works

Step 1

Apply During Junior Year

High school juniors apply for YouthWorks in the spring to begin their journey senior year. It’s a competitive program designed for students ready to grow personally and professionally.

Step 2

Start with Skills Training

The program kicks off senior year with a six-week training course that builds the foundation for success—both in life and in the workplace. Based on You Are Enough by Tony Wilson and Project IOWA’s Cultivating Careers curriculum, students build skills in professionalism, communication, purpose, and personal growth.

Step 3

Gain Real-World Experience

After training, students begin a nine-month, paid internship with one of our trusted local business partners. Interns may rotate through departments or dive deep into one role—either way, they’re building confidence, skills, and industry insight.

Step 4

Grow with Support and Mentorship

Each student is paired with a workplace mentor who provides guidance and encouragement throughout the internship. Weekly check-ins with YouthWorks staff offer continued support, reflection, and skill-building.

Step 5

Celebrate the Journey

The experience culminates in a Capstone Presentation, where interns reflect on their growth and share how YouthWorks has shaped their future.

Ana Luong Mentor, Affinity Credit Union

“I have shared this feedback several times, but I want to emphasize that Ariana has been a valuable addition to our training department. She consistently offers support with daily tasks, regardless of what they entail. I find her to be a quick learner who is open to asking for clarification when needed.”

Denise Villatoro Mentor

“Thanh always strives to complete tasks and projects in a timely and effective manner and is always more than excited to do this. His positive attitude makes working for him very easy and truly an enjoyable time for all of us.”

“Auby has been a great asset to our team and is expressing lots of interest in her everyday assignments as well as new projects. Auby constantly asks for different projects in different areas to grow her skills more and is not afraid to develop new skills in all areas.”

Doug Tallerico Mentor, FHLB

“Erik has shown up and worked hard every day. He has already helped our team complete a clean-up project (ahead of schedule). He’s open to other ideas and tasks that we are providing.”

Vivian Hayashi Mentor

“I’ve seen much growth in Riziki since she joined our office. She’s learning what’s appropriate and required in an office setting and how to conduct herself professionally.”

Keyonna Paige Mentor, Willkie House

“Camryn is willing to help with anything and is not afraid to ask questions.”
